1000VA APCs are rock solid. If you ever see a bad review, 90% chance it's for the 1350VA or 1500VA model. Source: I own two. One new, one old, both good.

It's almost always simulated, just the one that is "active PFC compatible" is a higher resolution sine wave of the other. Only really necessary for sensitive electronics and a few specific use cases.

They are all equally good, I would just ignore that comment. That person based their info on a sample size of 2 - for comparison my office used a dozen 1500s and they worked just fine.
