As long as your phone or tablet has NFC,you just download the ID app,then scan the car into game,via phone or tablet with NFC..if your phone or tablet doesn't have NFC you'll have to buy the ID...

Yes it does speed etc.. Works so you can play the mini games etc. I got an open box one off amazon for like 22 bucks. Worth it. And It comes with 2 ID cars. So double bonus.

I have the portal also, because the kids' iPads don't have NFC. There are bunch of mini games that use the portal, which are fun. The mini games are challenging and the NFC+Bluetooth works...

I bought the portal and it's pretty fun. You can get the portal bonuses which helps you upgrade your cars. I haven't splurged on the smart track, though. Still too pricey.
