These do make soft serve ice cream. I think the complaints are from people whose mixes or bowls are not cold enough, overrun too long, or it's a poor recipe that becomes far too icy.

Nope. It comes with a big insulated bowl that you put in the freezer overnight ahead of time and then you just put your regular icecream ingredients into it when you’re ready, let the icecream maker...

Depends how much you use it. A good one with a compressor will be over $200 more, so I wouldn't even compare.
