Rip= with the grain
Cross cut(often shortened to "cut") = across the grain.
Miter saws don't really rip, they just cut.

Why wouldn't you just stick with a corded saw for woodworking at home? The main (only?) advantage of this Ryobi saw is it's portability. And it's quiet (and for me it was cheap).
