The Yongnuo is good but I wish I had sprung for this one instead. It is loud and the lighting has to be perfect for it to autofocus.

Not really, with a magnification ratio of 1:4.8 that is nowhere near macro, "true" macro is 1:1/ Your typical 70-300mm lens has the same (if not better) magnification ratio.

Stopping down means to use a smaller aperture. You can use Aperture Priority mode (or Manual mode), and set aperture to ~ f8. My copy is very sharp at f8.

Look if your gonna get the youngno lens get the 1.4f stop version of their 50mm because the 1.8 has to be stopped down to 2.8 to have decent focus AND a sharp image otherwise the image is too soft ....
