The speed improvements from this gen and the 4th gen are minimal. But the first gen to 3rd gen is definitely much better performance wise

You can get a first gen used for around 300. The 12.9 is awesome for browsing, movies and comics. It also has a passable remote desktop for windows.
Not sure it is very realistic to get one...

Apple refurbs are always great. Get the same warranty, etc., as a brand new for a lot less, and you can get the APP+ for the refurbs too. I love the refurbs.
