It's a prequel to HL2. I'd recommend playing HL2 + the episodes if you can. The extra episodes of HL2 are referenced in Alyx. A flash forward in Alyx will spoil the ending of HL2 Episode 2.

I would instead get a 400 Dollar Oculus Quest. Although not as good as the Index it's not too far off and you can use a USB cable via Oculus Link to use your PC hardware just like the Index or Vive....
