Right, you add it as an Apple payment method under your Apple ID > Payment and shipping, then set it as default. I just did it and it pulled payment from my paypal which was set for my discover card.

On my account Apple will automatically use whatever balance I have to pay for iCloud services on my Apple ID before charging any card. So if you just add money to your account, you should be good...

That's not true. I got 20%- 25% off on $100 iTunes gift card at Costco last thanksgiving and I saw at least twice this year $100 gift card for $85 at Costco and Sam's Club.
