The pump reduces tds and reduces the waste water, and makes the ro membrane last longer. It's positioned before the membrane and doesn't influence output pressure.

If you're worried about wasted water, they make a post pump that pumps the waste water to the hot side rather than down the drain. I've been using one on mine for almost two decades. Works great.
