What software are you referring to? I'm a little lost here. I've used unlocked iPhones originally from AT&T or T-Mobile with no issues - as long as they have CDMA capability.

haha, must be true, I read it on the webs. I just swapped around a half dozen unlocked and sprint prepaid phones in the last month without problems. All done easily and free over the Tello dashboard....

If you're unwilling to spend the $10 from Tello, another option is to buy one on eBay. I also read somewhere that Amazon Sprint 4-in-1 SIM card may not always work on Tello. Good luck.
