Looks like these (the 16TB's) might be CMR, but the next 18TB's will be SMR per AnandTech https://www.anandtech.com/show/14297/seagate-starts-shipments-of-16-tb-hard-drives-preps-18-tb-smr-hdds

The largest capacity drives always have a pricing premium. When you're dealing with enterprise purchases, stuff like physical space and heat become more important than price per GB

I'm also in I.T. (since 96).... Among the work that I do, centered around Macs, Seagate has had a *slightly* higher fail rate than others. But never to the point of where I have said I would never...

I chose not to buy this because of the 7200rpm. For a new synology 5400 would be fine.

From my estimate, at $15/TB..this should be no more than $240. So NOPE...terrible deal.

But it's not an enterprise drive. It's a consumer external drive with a 1 year warranty. It's just cheaper to produce one drive and market it two ways.

I've been buying the exos 16tb drives for about $375. Not sure how I feel about this deal. I've been pretty happy with Seagate but I also have been using enterprise level drives.
