someone mentioned to me earlier that Tetra uses tempered (stronger) glass so they could use thinner (lighter) glass. if thinner stronger glass was just as good, that center brace wouldn't be needed....

This is definitely a YMMV post as stated in title. My Petsmart only had a 40g Marineland and a 20g Tetra. Everything else was Topfin tanks. No employee knew about the discount and it didn't ring...

FYI, Tetra uses tempered glass, thus they can afford thinner glass, lighter weight. All these tanks including Aqueon are budget line, so no point in comparing different brand. Just pay close...
