Believe the vertuo line patents have not expired, but thats hearsay from other posts on this site. That's the reason there's no third parties (at least well known) that make an alternative.

I dont have this model exactly but the coffee it makes is MUCH better than K cup stuff. My wife actually just picked this up for her mom because she likes ours so much. My favorite flavor is Odacio.

Agreed. Of course, the Originaline makes only espressos and I only drink espresso :) The espresso pods for the vertuo don't taste as well as the ones I get out of the older machine.
