Like ram chips. It'll be fine without a fan in most cases as long as your airflow is OK and ambient Temps aren't high. A heatsink will and does make a big difference without active cooling.

I got an $8 generic PCIe adapter to put this in my QNAP TS453Be for cache. It works fine without heat sink. I am streaming video from the QNAP and the SSD only reached 46C while the CPU is 52C.
