This is true only for Xbox One games. For Xbox 360 games you own it permanently (once you claim it) even after your Gold sub expires.

You are correct, but I think you may be taking their response out of context. You can not get even Xbox 360 games with gold with a trial membership.

This is true for XB1 games, but the 360 games given away each month are yours to keep. Still not sure if a trial Gold membership would work, however.

There are sales all the time, or at least there used to be pre-Covid. IIRC I paid around $40-45/yr to buy a year at a time and then I stocked up on a full 3 years and then converted it to Game Pass...
