I believe front loaders are better for larger items because they get properly flipped and flopped rather than just sitting there and getting slightly twisted.

I've had both and prefer top loaders for their fewer balance and door lip standing water/mold issues. Don't care much about the small difference in water usage.

I mainly use it on clothes not sheets. But it works really well in my experience. I will regularly put clothes in there for the wrinkle setting and steam alone.
