You still have 4GB + 4GB in dual channel and the rest is in single channel.
My experience on a desktop is dual channel RAM does not improve overall perforance by much. I only get about 1~2%...

You can have dual chanel memory, but it would be limited to 8gb, any additional memory would be in single channel. Because you can only have dual channel up to double the smallest stick installed....
