Cheap paper white is the way to go. Check out a book from the library, have it delivered to the kindle, turn on airplane mode and you can keep it forever. (or until you re-sync it) I have spares...

You can send .mobi files to any Kindle and it will read just fine. The free program Calibre can convert almost any ebook type to mobi, I use it quite frequently to send stuff to my old Paperwhite.
