If you're in a desktop browser, you should see a "buy it now" option a little lower (beneath the KindleUnlimited offer). It should show Kindle Price as $0.00.

Be sure when you add the Kindle eBook to your cart that it is $0.00 as these prices do change frequently. Also the books that say (FREE with Prime) are only Free for Amazon Prime members.​​​ ...

Legality is sketchy at best, but I've used Calibre software to "backup" a Kindle book in epub format in the past.
