I have one and I did not use the strips and the mattress does not slide off. I figure if I ever want to flip the mattress over or change the position it would be an aggravation to be sticking on...

There are two strips of adhesive on the wooden planks that stick to the bottom of your mattress. You can see the stickers in the pic of the bed without a mattress on it.
