I did the same thing, although I never put the prepaid SIM in after getting the phone from AT&T corporate store. Went straight to my postpaid SIM and had no issues.

What I've read is that while you can use an AT&T postpaid sim in the phone, you can't unlock the phone unless it has the same prepaid sim in it for 6 consecutive months.

Yeah it says it is locked to AT&T prepaid for 6 months. The $300 plan is prepaid, so you should be fine.
