According to that CNET article you linked the Sidewalk tech can be implemented on Amazon devices as old as the Echo Dot 1st gen. Amazon has apparently been planning this feature for quite sometime...

If it sounds muffled you may have a defective device, the best way I can describe all the ones Ive heard are crisp with decent bass given their size (especially compared to 2nd gen).

These 3rd Gens don't have enough treble which makes it difficult to hear voices on them. Everything sounds muffled. I much prefer the 2nd Gens when making voice calls and using the Drop-in feature....

Thanks for responding. If that's the case I see very little reason to upgrade to the 4th Gen espcially since it's non-mountable and more bulky. I'm really not a fan of the new form factor.
