You are right 12-point wrenches. They are mostly universal while the the 6-point wrenches are rare and expensive. The 6-point wrench would also be much harder to use in tight spaces.

I'm no mechanic, but as far as I've heard, it's easier to strip a bolt using 12 point wrenches/sockets. On the other hand, I think 12 point can give you a better grip?

As I said, a poor quality wrench with loose tolerance may fit, but won't work well. 5/8" is only 15.875 mm, too small to correctly fit a 16 mm bolt. You may be able to "make it work", but it is not...
