What was the code being thrown? It's possible the cel wasn't related to the vehicles emissions system. You wouldn't pass a smog test in CA with this method due to incomplete readiness monitors.

Depends on the car. I would disconnect the battery from my 2000 Camry to reset the CEL. Then I would drive about 50 miles,enough to get readings from the sensors but not enough to trip the CEL. ...

make sure you know what battery type you have and get an appropriate charger wet lead acid -> enhanced lead acid -> AGM -> lithium
