My Sony x800 doesn’t read the 3D MKV. I have to make them m2ts which sucks because it’s hard to seek and lose chapters which are in the MKV. what are you using that reads the 3D MKV?

good point. it actually does half the res as the final video file is still 1920x1080 (960x1080 per eye i reckon) and the end file is like 6-8gb...very very manageable if you want to slap it onto sd...

Just put a regular bluray disc in and run MakeMKV. MakeMKV wont' recognize the drive unless you flashed successfully. Doesn't have to be an UHD disc.
