Those are just inherent design flaws. It's a 1st Gen device. You either deal with them or you don't. Moly hinge is a little crunchy. And my usb-c is cracked as well. As are many others.

Trade in seems to be independent of phone transaction. If you do return, trade in does not get affected (exchange sends u via PayPal that u get to keep). Another poster said this, I haven't done it.
