This is only true if your aquarium is lower than your faucet. If your faucet is lower, you can turn off the faucet water once you see the suction going and allow gravity to do the rest.

Nah, for me once I get it started you can turn off the water. Alternatively use a small pump from your tank to prime the flow which is what I do.
