This is only true if your aquarium is lower than your faucet. If your faucet is lower, you can turn off the faucet water once you see the suction going and allow gravity to do the rest.

+1 It does waste a lot of water. A 5 gallon bucket and a siphon cleaner doesn't waste any water and a lot cheaper to begin with.

I use this to refill new water only. For draining, I pull the hose out to water my garden. I don’t like to use it to siphon water out, way too much water wasted with this method.

This thing wastes a lot of water. It requires two hoses and a facet. The water needs to be running to supply the suction. Just FYI.

Nah, for me once I get it started you can turn off the water. Alternatively use a small pump from your tank to prime the flow which is what I do.
