This looks like the non-TTL version, so this is an expected price during Black Friday season. I usually shoot in manual for more control but shooting wide open with HSS and TTL is just a no brainer...

In generally, I'd take this all day long over the 400 - for the reasons you mentioned. The cycle times are being overblown - you often use it on a lower setting and it cycles MUCH faster than 2.5...

those times are worst case - i shoot the 600, i can't remember if i've ever used it full power - usually it's much lower than full, and the recycle times are well below 2.5 seconds - under a second...

The main issue with these is the bulk. But this is not much more bulk than the 600 Pro. I just tested it and it is LESS than 1sec @ 1/2 power, almost instant. 1/2+0.7 is a solid 1.45 second....

If you drop the 600 to 400, that half stop as you say, doesnt the recycle time also get reduced so not exactly, .9 to 2.5.

No. This is a great strobe. It does have a modeling light, but continuous lighting is not what it does well.

For me I like the pro versions more because the led modeling lamp is much brighter, I think a little over 30w on the pro vs around 10 on the non pro. The pro also has ttl and a much faster recycle...

I got this back in 2018 for $423 and thought it was a steal. This price is a no brainer if you need the light. If choosing between the 400 pro and 600 non-ttl, go with 600. I've never regretted...
