I don't see how that's even remotely true. You don't need a PC. I can stream 4k uhd from my NAS to the Plex app on my tv. You can use a nvidia SHIELD or fire instead if your tv doesn't support that...

Well, most transcoding is because of the audio too. I know for a fact before I took plex off my i9 to my 453be, I tried watching a 4k file on a 1080tv and a 1080 stream on my Mac and I had no issues...

If all you want is an infrequent access, why not use a USB stack enclosure that can hold multiple disks? I got a 8 bay none RAID hot swap enclosure from Amazon for around $200. I prefer none RIAD...

You can mix different size drives - they just default to the lowest size drive for the raid.

I think you’d be asking a lot of any NAS with that kind of use. With that kind of load your cheapest option would be to build a machine. Rule of thumb is cpumark of 2000 per simultaneous 1080 stream.

qnap seems to have beefier specs than synology though. i went with the tvs-672n. it handles direct stream 4k over ethernet to my tv just fine.
