I bought an older 25W one a few years ago, and while it sounds pretty good, the most important part is that the exposed tubes look frickin' awesome! Picked up a pair of their inexpensive 4"...

A decent 300B amp can be had for sub $1K, KT88 or EL34 single ended class A amps are even less. But that is not the point. Judge an amp by price or origin without hearing in person is arrogant. ...

Schiit stack is a good option. The Schiit Modi is a good DAC around the $100 price point and will be more than enough for a headset in that range.

Technically, the competitor to the tube is the MOSFET and within the context of audio amplification, Wiki says the start was 1974, although bipolar (the typical) power transistor amps were late 60's...

On sale again. I have the first gen and love it. It's not perfect, but that's what gives it the nostalgic feel. Pair this with a turntable and you're transformed back to the 60's.

Well it's hobby first and foremost. To answer your question, these are a few reasons I can think of: asthetics, nostalgia, flavors, experiments, the kool-aid (aka YouTube, reddit, ASR, etc..),...

The main difference is that tubes distort gracefully when you get up to their maximum output, while transistors start clipping. With honest ratings of both, the maximum undistorted output level...

So is this 25w total or 25w per channel? Outside of not being a "real" tube amp, is it any good?

Yes, but the IC is made up of transistors. So in essence it's still a transistor amp.

A real tube amplifier gives you a throaty sound. Think of the old Fox body Mustangs with the aftermarket headers, cam and Magnaflow exhaust compared to a new stock 4 cylinder turbo Mustang.

I'll also add, if you listen to Edm, rap, metal, or Jpop..a tube amp isn't going to help. Some might work well, but most will sound muddy when music gets really busy.
