You definitely can do that but I'd prefer not to subject it to 48 hours of constant reads and writes in an enclosure that has zero cooling. Once I confirmed it had the right drive inside I shucked it...

You can also pre-clear over usb just in case it has issues. Not a fan of Seagate though. Lost more than one which is why i run a nas now.

Ran a fan on the case and it stayed very cool. Tried another without the fan and didnt get as hot as you would think. Maybe 2-3 degrees hotter. I was surprised. These were wd 12 tb & 14 tb.

You should get a consumer enclosure that supports Thunderbolt or USB 3.x. Too complicated to get a SAS controller on a laptop. You will pay plenty for a fast one.
