You definitely can do that but I'd prefer not to subject it to 48 hours of constant reads and writes in an enclosure that has zero cooling. Once I confirmed it had the right drive inside I shucked it...

I’m running an Unraid server and even when I plug in a drive via USB it’ll tell me the model of the drive inside. I’ll just Google whatever the model number is before shucking.

You can also pre-clear over usb just in case it has issues. Not a fan of Seagate though. Lost more than one which is why i run a nas now.

I have had much the same experience with Seagate over the past two decades. HGST and Toshiba are good (just got a Toshiba 2TB), but mostly I use WD.

A NetApp 4246 or a NetApp 4243 . Used on fleabay. Can hold 24 drives, redundant PS, IOM etc. For cheaper than most consumer grade NAS units. Just add a SAS controller for 40 bux to your pc and run...

Ran a fan on the case and it stayed very cool. Tried another without the fan and didnt get as hot as you would think. Maybe 2-3 degrees hotter. I was surprised. These were wd 12 tb & 14 tb.
