Not encluding a RAM slot is planned obsolescence. It probably cost them pennies to have a slot vs not. But on the other hand, they know that no slot = quicker device upgrade.

Looks like the $500 model is clearly better then. Things like backlit and fingerprint are not important to me. Battery life and better screen are worth $50 more. Just wish this was closer to $400...

Most people looking for a machine in this price range with a low-wattage CPU probably don’t need more than 8GB. I don’t really see that changing much within the next 2-3 years. Just my .02.

Soldering the ram doesn't decrease the ram, and not everyone needs more than 8gb. Under $400 and you're in chromebook territory, which is significantly worse.
