Circular or miter saw would be your best bets. Circular is fairly versatile and cheaper than a miter.

Yep, the rear handle is a helical gear drive. Just as good if not better than a wormdrive. It's basically right in between a wormdrive and a sidewinder.

A 4x4 is actually 3-1/2 x 3-1/2. So you would still need to turn and cut again based on it doing 2-5/8 cuts.
