I completely agree. While the some of the world building was interesting I found the overall story very tedious. I read a lot of science fiction and couldn't recommend this.

Actually it's part of a four book series. Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, and Rise of Endymion. I was confused about the cliffhanger comment. Now it makes sense if you stopped at book two.
