Generators are one of those things you just don't mess around with. These are 100% china made engines. They most likely have a limited life and will get harder to manag. it seems fairly inefficient...

Just run the generator dry, no 'cleaning' necessary. You should do that for any modern gas powered equipment that is going to be stored for extended periods of time.

I know for a fact that all my UPSes refused to charge when plugged into an old generator from harbor freight. After I replaced it with inverter generator problem went away
