That is correct, you have to check that box to indicate you had some kind of crypto activity throughout the year, but you don't have to report your purchases to the IRS, as the OP suggested.

You must provide your social security number to participate You only need to provide your SS number if you withdraw the funds associated with the purchase, not just to "buy" the crypto-based funds....

Click the Buy button and you can enter any amount >$1. The $10 min has to be done in one transaction. Also, you don't need to enter your SS info before purchase, only when you go to sell it.

The IRS is supra-Constitutional. If there is a checkbox on the 1040 form asking if you purchased crypto in 2020, and in fact you did, I would check the box. It's similar to their FBAR (not Fubar)...
