Don't get shitty adapters like this. You want UASP support. The JMS578 controller is what most people recommend. You can find adapters with this controller on Amazon for $6 all day.

The greatest problem I see with this design is that even USB 3.0 may not adequately power a mechanical HDD. A separate power adapter would be more appropriate.

The issue is power. A 3.5in drive uses the 5v and 12v rails. USB only supplies 5v so the drives won't spin up. They make these adapters that also have an external power adapter for 3.5in drives.
