I remember my local news channel had a segment about deodorizing smelly sponges and they said simply putting them out in the sun for a day or two will disinfect and completely remove smells.

Ring it out as best you can after every use. Occasionally microwave for 20 seconds or so, or put it in boiling water for a few seconds.
