If you're referring to the previous My Passport models, it's not a proprietary cable, it's a USB 3.0 Micro B cable. My Samsung Note phone used the same cable. These drives come with a short cable...

My laptop has standard USB ports. Would this HD work on laptops without USB-C ports? Or Do I need to buy a special cable? Thanks.

I think people mean it doesn’t use the USB 3.0 Micro-B “sidecar” connectors which seem to be pretty much limited to external hard drives these days. You can use a regular 2.0 Micro-B cable, but even...

FYI a regular Micro USB cable works in these ports, albeit at USB 2.0 speed.

Just bought 2 for my Windows 10 desktop. Is there any way to add a password on the drives after formatting them for Windows? I lost about 1TB of files, videos, photos in my youth; never again!...

Thanks. I do have Windows 10 Pro. I'll do a little more research on these 2 methods then as I want to be able to occasionally access the drives on my brother's MacBook as well.

Paid $117 on Amazon a few months ago. Been solid since purchased as Time Machine drive. Don't mind paying a few more dollars for this over the My Passports to get USB-C.

Exactly - not a fan of USB Micro-B
Post #146360159 added 03-31-2021 9:46 AM by gadgetdude in Deal Talk
I must have missed that $117 - lowest I caught was $119 a few times on the Windows version but the prices CONSTANTLY change day to day :) totally agree on USB-C

Having a native USB-C port on such a comparatively slow device is not worth a $15-$20 premium over the standard micro-B connector, even if you hate it.

Bitlocker is probably best if you have Win 10 Pro. If you have Win 10 Home, you can use WD's security software to use hardware encryption. https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx
