The fact that it doesn't have a proprietary cable is the thing that makes me want to pull the trigger

Link? I've been tracking this these specific 5GB models for months (both Win and Mac) waiting on a deal and this is definitely the lowest in a long time. I held of last Dec when the Windows...

I think people mean it doesn’t use the USB 3.0 Micro-B “sidecar” connectors which seem to be pretty much limited to external hard drives these days. You can use a regular 2.0 Micro-B cable, but even...

FYI a regular Micro USB cable works in these ports, albeit at USB 2.0 speed.

Thanks. I do have Windows 10 Pro. I'll do a little more research on these 2 methods then as I want to be able to occasionally access the drives on my brother's MacBook as well.

Bitlocker is probably best if you have Win 10 Pro. If you have Win 10 Home, you can use WD's security software to use hardware encryption. https://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx

What external drive has a proprietary cable exactly?
Post #146558075 added 04-10-2021 5:06 PM by CashCroc in Deal Talk
Is this normal for B&H photo? My external drive has been on “backorder” since I purchased it.

I see.. does the USB 3 Type C controller actually make much of a difference vs Micro-B though ?

I have Windows. Should I buy this and reformat or wait for the other one to go on sale?

Is this any better than the black 5TB WD MyPassort (non ultras) that were going for around 95-100 just a few weeks ago ? Is it because its silver and formatted for Mac out of the box that we are...

$10 to $20 more than they would charge for an Android one no matter if they are exactly the same. Pay the all-mighty I-God. 2 years behind on 5G phones too.

Mac users like to pay more for the same thing. It makes us feel superior to everyone else.

I would say yes just reformat the drive to ntsf or whatever format you need
Post #146374688 added 03-31-2021 9:55 PM by az060693 in Deal Talk
No, you're paying for the aforementioned and it having type-C. There's something to be said about not having to carry an assortment of cables, vs carrying just one type, so there is that. But in...

If you're referring to the previous My Passport models, it's not a proprietary cable, it's a USB 3.0 Micro B cable. My Samsung Note phone used the same cable. These drives come with a short cable...

Post #146359829 added 03-31-2021 9:30 AM by gadgetdude in Deal Talk
I don't think there is a speed advantage but for me it's about standard cables as this one is one of the few with a USB 3 Type-C connector instead of most others with a USB 3 Micro-B connector. I...
