I thought going to Hong Kong didn’t require a visa. However, if you go to Hong Kong and are trying to re enter mainland prc you will need a multiple entry visa (at least for American).

You need a visa to visit PRC which means bringing your passport to their embassy along with an application and 2x2 photo. It’s $30 for single entry.
