Cat 5e and 6 will run gigabit. Check the writing on the cable in your box if you can, it'll be marked. If it's 5e, you can save a few bucks on patch cords.

Wifi still not close to cable when multiple devices are considered with any reasonable amount of load. Though I'll admit to the average person it probably doesn't matter at all.
