I have never had a battery leak in the first one or two years of its claimed 10 year shelf life. Do not buy packs with dust on them, they are too old, also check the date on the package.

I agree. I prefer rechargeable where possible as they are less likely to leak but some devices need alksline's nominal voltage and those devices I inspect frequently for leaking.
