Yes, they sell ssd to m. 2 adapters. Usually around 5 bucks or so. Look for it on temu or eBay or the biggest forest website.

I don't have a M.2 slot on my desktop. I do have a PCIe adapter card that takes a NVME ssd. Would I get better performance with a SATA SSD drive or with a PCIe adapter card with a NVME drive...

Correct a gen 4 is backward compatible. Basically, buying a Gen 4 gives you somewhat a future proofing purchase

Keep in mind these are qlc drives. So compare to the intel 670p. Imho, at the a similar price I'd go for tlc drive like the mp34. Qlc should be about 75% the cost of a tlc drive since it has 75%...
