For the most part, PETG is a much better choice to have around then ABS. ABS _should_ be cheaper then PETG but to be honest, I'm seeing PETG around $12-$15 most of the time.

For me, ABS has a little better temperature stability, but that's about it.
If you really need strength without too much effort, look at Overture easy nylon. They seem to have no discounts on that...
