It really depends on the situation. Type and length of ducting (vertical vs straight back as well as sizing), number of BTU, etc. A lot of higher CFM hoods are grossly overstated in their CFM ratings...

the high cfm fans are useless if the duct is that narrow one that goes through the walls. The duct in that case is the bottle neck.
