I think they allow it in order to simplify the filling process. If you have a lot of transactions to file that is. It certainly saved me time.

Nope, there is no income limit for federal taxes. You get state free if your AGI meets the Free File criteria, but everyone else pays $15 for state e-file with them. Still cheaper than many options....
