Sony has the Dolby Vision the kids are always talking about these days. The Panasonic doesn't.
Someone might have already mentioned it, but DO NOT buy a Sony 4K player. Not only is it annoying to have to manually disable/enable Dolby Vision depending on the content, but almost any movie written to a BD100 disc will freeze about 2/3rds of the way in. Sony has ignored this issue for years, just like a lot of the issues/bugs plaguing their other products. Do not support this company. They could care less about giving the consumer a product that can perform its basic functions.

Here's a list of movies on BD100 discs that you won't be able to watch in their entirety on a Sony 4K player.

There's a lot of niche/limited-run stuff that simply doesn't exist on streaming platforms in the US, let alone older stuff that's long been out of print (you can have my original Robotech DVD set with the original audio when you pry it from my cold, dead hands). Discs may be deprioritized for a lot of folks, and even understandably so...but they're not going anywhere.

This or the Panasonic 420? I already have the 820 for my main room so this player would be secondary.

Let me know where I can find free computers for running plex (including a warranty) along with someone willing to do the work encoding the media and storing it there while ensuring my storage is sufficient and the system has enough resources to handle the load. Then we'll talk.

Other option is to drop $150 on this player and however much per disk and the work is done.

While in general I agree with you (I bought the Panasonic 420 and value the disc quality), both seem to be a single purchase, no? Why do you need computers (plural)? A single machine hosts and processes the video sent to a smart tv or streaming device.

Again, still different uses and priorities, I get it. A simpler answer of a desire for quality and simplicity versus streaming anywhere in the house would have worked.

I know there aren't time machines, but VIPOutlet has sold these refurbished for as low as $70 (even less with coupons) at multiple times over the past two years. I don't know that they will ever do so again, but if you don't need a player right now it's probably worth waiting. These will definitely hit $150 again.

If you need a player right now - if you want Dolby Vision or SACD playback get this one. If you don't need Dolby Vision, then get the Panasonic. The Panasonic should be better at upscaling non-4K content.

I don't get Sony and their weird marketing....
...Back in the mid 2000s
Sony had elegant Blu-ray players. Solid build with blue tinted glass face-plates.
Then in 2010s all models low-tier and upper-tier looked exactly the same.
These look somewhat better....

You can still purchase digital version. I agree bluray's IQ is better though.

Some things you can't stream or even download. I just bought a Spanish blu ray of the 80s horror movie neon maniacs off ebay. I ripped it to my pc and will watch it from a hard drive but the point is not everything is available to stream or download a good quality version of.

4k Blu ray disc, not "disk" right?

Had to throw that out there just for accuracy.

You don't own digital versions though, they can remove them anytime they choose. Read your TOS sometimes.

Not every 4K player will process sound/image the same. A lot of people don't need the latest and greatest because they are buying a Hisense budget TV on black Friday (which is totally fine). For those that buy high end equipment, you have to spend up to be able to take advantage of the best features possible.
Personally, I have a modest home theater and consider it an enjoyable hobby. I love my Epson 6030UB projector but it is 'only' a 1080p model. However, my sound system is very capable (maybe beyond what my projector produces by way of video for the time being). For me, sound is just as important as the image for immersion purposes. To get the best audio possible, I would need a 4K player that can take advantage of the complex information stored on a disc which is why I'm more willing to upgrade to a good 4K player. I have a good AVR that will help process streaming audio through the 5.2.4 setup I have in place but it won't be the same as watching a physical movie that is designed with those channels to be utilized. There is a reason the physical discs contain so much more data than a standard 4K stream of the same title. It simply holds far more complex information for equipment to be able to utilize.
This may not be the player for me but for a lot of folks, this is a good buy and a type of technology that won't be going anywhere anytime soon since they will continue to improve on what they can offer year over year just like most other technology out there
I was thinking about this recently when watching a friends low end TV and if anything, people with low quality TVs need physical discs even more because cheap TVs can't handle lower quality content as well. Streaming services will introduce artifacts that I don't notice as much on my TV compared to the cheap TV I was watching at the time, I guess it's partially because of the TVs upscaling quality but I don't know much about how that works but I could definitely tell a difference.

100% the UB420. Panasonic makes the best 4K Disc players because of the HDR Tone Mapping & HDR Optimizer functions they have built in that no other player has, not even the consoles. UB420 if your TV doesn't to Dolby Vision, UB820 if it does.

There really isn't a reason 99% of people would have to buy any other player than a Panasonic 420/820. They really are that good.

You also will personally benefit from the interfaces being completely identical.

Also, 4k from a disk, through the correct hardware & wires, provides a better picture than streaming 4k!
The picture is definitely better, but I've always found that the audio is VASTLY better from a disc. I have a decent sound system, but it only reaches its potential from my BR discs.
