As of this evening (Nov 8th), about 10% of all community members will see a freshly redesigned Frontpage and Deal Details page. The fresh designs are a mini first step in a series of updates that will come in the next 12 months to help you save more and discover new ways to help fellow community members. The design also strives to better welcome new community members.

This thread will act as an FAQ and place for discussing the changes.

Let's get into the details:

What is new?

- Visual Design: The new design adheres to current Web standards. The new design appears on both the Frontpage and the Deal Details page.

-- Changes Specific To The Frontpage --

- Personalized Feed: For the last 20 years, the community sorted the Frontpage by the newest deals first. This is great for existing community members who understand how Slickdeals works, but newer members report confusion about how and why deals appear in the order they do. To help existing and new members alike, the design splits the Frontpage into 3 separate sections: Recommended/For You, Frontpage, Popular. Let's walk through each of these:
Recommended/For You: The default tab for all community members is the Recommended or For You tab. For any logged out community members, this tab contains a series of trending deals across Frontpage, Popular, and Hot deals and is labeled "Recommend." For logged in members, this tab contains a personalized set of deals based on your browsing and engagement history on Slickdeals and is labeled "For You."
Frontpage/Popular: These tabs contain Frontpage or Popular deals sorted by most recent deals based on Frontpage/Popular date first, just like how the Frontpage and Popular deals page work today. Sorting and filtering are coming soon.
- Featured Deals: The row of deals labeled "Featured" that used to appear at the top of the Frontpage moved to the feed on the Recommended/For You tab. Approximately seven Featured Deals appear every 3-4 deals with a "Promoted" tag.

Can I change my default tab?

You can change the tab that appears by default when you load the page. Go to My Profile > Settings and Options > Site Settings > and set the "Default Frontpage Tab'' setting to whichever tab you prefer. Now, whenever you go to the home page, your preferred tab will always be the first set of deals you will see. Also, if you have not set your default tab, the site will remember which tab you visited last. If you leave the site and come back, the last tab you visited will be the tab that you will see.

How do I see the new design?

Don't worry if you can't see the new design right away. The testing system randomly selected 10% of the community to see the new design. You can see the new design by clicking on this link and then navigating to the home page. This will let you access the test so that you can engage with the new design. If you would like to opt-out, click on this link and navigate to the home page again. That will take you out of the test and you will see the normal home page and Deal Details page.

If those links do not work, try these three things:
  1. Make sure you are using a desktop or laptop device. Slickdeals in a browser on a mobile device does not yet have the new design.
  2. If you have the Slickdeals extension installed, you will have to wait a few more months to access the new design.
  3. Make sure you do not have any "dislike" home page preferences. The new design does not yet support the "dislike" setting. If any category or store is set to "dislike" you will be unable to see the new design.

How do I leave feedback?

There are two ways to leave feedback for this test:
  1. Reply to this thread! Share with your fellow community members what you like and don't like about the new experience.
  2. Click on the blue smiley face in the bottom right corner of the new design. This will allow you to leave anonymous feedback about the page and should allow you to highlight individual elements so you can be specific with your feedback.

Thank you to all the community members who provided feedback that resulted in these changes and thanks to those who take the time to share feedback for the next wave of improvements.

I hate the new Front Page layout. Am blinded by the WHITENESS of the page. Cannot focus on the individual POSTS.
Please change it back or add more background color.

Yes, why so white? It hurts.

Is there a curtain number two, Monte? I feel like curtain number one was a Zonk!

And how am I supposed to regret my life choices if I can't see expired deals?

The font and font size is hard to read.
The price display of the deal also seems odd - the Blue color selected has a weird contrast with the rest of the page.
No emphasis on the product, only the price, causes me to get lost in the page.

Just got the new design on my latest refresh - was quite a shock. Agree with others that it's way too white, and while I love that a dark mode is coming, that isn't a solution to properly designing the light mode. A simple light gray site background would go a long way.

Additionally, why did pages get even smaller in width? Noticing it on deal pages specifically, it takes me practically twice as long to scroll down the page reading comments because they only take up like 30% width of the screen. Really irritating on widescreen devices. The whole side should be wider and scaled appropriately per device width,.

Carousel buttons ("<" and ">"), and especially the div container they live in, hide the content underneath them.

E.g. on https://slickdeals.net/computer-deals/ there are (at least) two carousels, "Trending Stores" and "Coupon for Popular Stores". Their opacity seems to be 1, i.e. not transparent, unless the mouse is hovering over them, then the opacity is set to 0.9. It would be better IMHO if there was some transparency even when the mouse is not hovering over the button or div, allowing the user to read what is underneath. And 0.9 makes it barely transparent enough to be able to read what's underneath, so I'd decrease the opacity even more.

Just got the new design today and wanted to echo the sentiments on the new design....waaay too much white. Please add a differentiating color to the background to make it easier to focus on the content.

The font and font sizes do seem a little off, too. Price should be smaller and the actual item info should be a little bigger.

Edit: I just realized that the actual deal/item layout was updated, too. The font sizes seem comical here. Way too big, and the actual use of screen real estate for higher resolution screens is too small. I have a 2560x1440 monitor and maybe 60% of the screen is wasted white space. The content has been smooshed compared to the old design.

Ditto on the blinding white space. Also, I'm not sure a dark mode will help with all the empty space. It feels 'sparse' for some reason but I changed the default for me to Frontpage so maybe that will help. Going to the forums and seeing the old banner already made feel more comfortable. Besides the overwhelming white space, maybe there is some other design language that I just can't put my finger on. Maybe spread out the deals in the center so they take up more of the page or add another column of deals?

Thank you for this feedback. Settings are coming that should support a more 'condensed' mode for members who know their way around.

Thanks for sharing the details of your screen resolution. These types of specifics help the product design team view the new visual designs through your eyes. This is just the very first in a long line of updates. There will be a decent gap in time between this first update and then the next update and rapid iterations to follow. The community design team wanted to get member eyes on this version to determine where to spend time next.

Thanks for sharing the URL of the page you are referencing. The design team hasn't updated anything on this page for awhile. However, the team does plan to update this page in the coming 12 months. Your input is most welcome.

Good, valid question. The community design team is getting ready for a mobile responsive Slickdeals. When the site is fully mobile responsive we hope to address your wide screen preferences.

LOL. There is a curtain 2, and 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... there are a LOT of iterations to come. The community design team made a decision to get a v1 out as fast as possible, gather feedback, and then determine changes and priorities. Thanks for making us all laugh.

It sounds like you are saying that it is taking you longer to visually process the page. The community design team will see what they can do about that in upcoming updates.

This is my exact problem with the new layout. Previously, I always used the list mode to just scan the deals on the front page. The only reason I made an account on the site was because the option to personalize the front page became locked behind having an account. On the new front page, the only way (I can find at least) to view the deals is in the new web style grid view. It just takes a lot longer to zig zag across the page to try and find interesting deals.

Ultimately, it's not what I want. I just want to be able to scan the list quickly and efficiently, which I don't believe this design allows. I'm sure it's great for people that are more visual, I would just like the option back for the list view.

Thanks for taking a moment to clarify. 100% hear you. The community design team will add a list view option to this new visual design. In addition, we are adding more intuitive tools to keep Slickdeals personalized to your preferences. Your feedback and patience is greatly appreciated.

Absolutely abhor the new design and it makes SD unusable.

I've been trying and trying to get back to the old way, but the link above does nothing. I've checked my settings, turned off ad block, etc. Nothing.

Please help me get back to Classic SlickDeals! Horrible timing with Christmas just around the corner too... ugh. The brightness, the spacing, the font... it all just sucks. It's like the Grinch did a web redesign.

If you want to excuse yourself from the new visual design while the community design team prioritizes the suggested changes, visit this link:
https://slickdeals.net/sdtest/?do=place&hash=aaa6cae00
Then visit the homepage:
https://slickdeals.net/
That should return you to the October 2021 version of Slickdeals' homepage.
