While this may not be the best speaker (based on above comments) couldn't you use it for the future trade in value? Get 3rd gen minimum folks. Unless you prefer a very tinny speaker by comparison. Only plus with the older gen is the MicroUSB instead of a barrel plug but honestly even at $5 these would not be worth it right now today.

These voice assistants are not useless, if you feel that way, you just aren't creative enough to put them to good use. Big difference.

When my daughter was an infant, I used mine to play lullaby playlists remotely, set routines to turn on/off lights based on time of day, etc. Smart devices will always be useful, provided the user knows how to actually use the product

I prefer Google assistant over Alexa but I much prefer echo dots over home minis because the 3.5 mm out.

The 2nd Gen Echo dot was the worst one in my opinion. It had the lowest volume, the mics were not very receptive, and I had two that kept going offline.

I'm going to third the comments on this version being the worst Dot. Terrible speaker and lackluster mic pickup. IMHO the third gen Dot is the best balance of features.
