Large backpack as checked luggage?

A group of us are flying to take a backpacking trip and have large backpacks that will need checked. We're looking for a way to package our backpacks (mostly 65L) so they don't get shredded getting transported as checked luggage. I'm aware that there are a few options (such as the Osprey Airporter) but they're quire expensive for one-of trip. Has anyone got any other suggestions?

Some airports offer a wrapping service. I guess you might be able to do the same with a large roll of wrap yourself.

FYI I found this video [youtube.com] on YouTube that suggests using an Ikea Storage Bag [ikea.com] also available on Amazon [amazon.com].
